EDM / Electric Discharge Machining

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a manufacturing procedure that produces desired shapes by using electrical discharges / sparks. It is sometimes referred to as spark machining, die sinking, burning, wire erosion or wire burning. Here the process depends upon the workpiece and tool, not creating actual contact.

The EDM process is actually quite simple. An electric spark is made between a workpiece and an electrode. The spark is visual flow of the electricity. And this electric spark makes extreme heat with temperature reaching 8000 to 12000 Degrees Celsius. The heat can melt almost anything. Further, the spark is carefully controlled & localized so that it affects the material surface only. Commonly, the EDM process does not impact the heat treat beneath the surface. With wire EDM the electric spark always occur in the deionized water dielectric. Here the water conductivity is carefully controlled, and this makes an effective environment for EDM process. The water works as a coolant and flushes away the eroded particles of metal.

The electrical discharge machining method is mainly used for hard metals, or those that can be difficult to machine with conventional techniques. Typically, the EDM works with electrically conductive materials. It can cut complex contours or enclosed spaces in pre-hardened steel efficiently. Also, there is no need for heat treatment to soften / re-harden them. This method is utilized with any other metal or alloy such as titanium, inconel, hastelloy and kovar.
